• CURRENTS: Collaborative Art and Ecology on the Passaic River
Saturday June 29, 2024, 1 - 4pm
Newark Riverfront Park, Somme Street Entrance
709 Raymond Blvd, Newark 07105
"CURRENTS: Collaborative Art and Ecology on the Passaic River" at Prudential presents North to Shore Festival is a unique art and ecology project that aims to create a collaborative narrative of the Passaic River through community sampling efforts and site-responsive artmaking. This culturally responsive project is led by Amanda Thackray, a multidisciplinary ecofeminist artist and educator, and Dr. Stephanie Jordan, a critical ethnographer of ocean science studies, in collaboration with Dr. Allison Fitzgerald marine biologist at NJCU and Sandra LaVigne, marine biologist from the Great Swamp Watershed Association.
At CURRENTS, guests will have the opportunity to engage in water sampling and visual assessments, helping them to better connect with the local river. Along with investigating the riverbank and exploring collaborative artmaking and guided creative writing, we'll build a temporary art exhibit on site at the park. We'll curate works on paper and other materials to build tiled artwork. Through design, learned insights will be woven together to tell a lyrical and visual narrative reflective of the connection between the river and the local community.
