Rootwork portrays a tableau of environmental resilience featuring a group of native and naturalized hyperaccumulating plants that grow in New Jersey. Hyperaccumulators thrive in soils burdened with heavy metals and other contaminants, pulling toxins from the soil and, over time, reclaiming the land from overburdened industrial use.
In the image, the space around the plants portrays a stylized strata of the earth and sky. Plants and fungi in this mural include Helianthus (common sunflower), Trifolium pratense (red clover), Amanita muscaria (fly agaric mushroom), Pleurotus ostreatus (oyster mushroom), and Cyanoboletus pulverulentus (ink stain bolete). There are numerous other hyperaccumulating species that grow naturally in Newark NJ and surrounding areas.
