It examines tears not as a weakness, but as a personal strength. In this case, the weakness is denying oneself’s emotions and hindering the physical manifestation of emotion. In lieu of authentic tears, the video employs stop-motion embroidered tears, ones which literally leave their mark on the face of the subject to make up for past and potential future voids of physical emotion.

This years theme, I and Thou: The Book as Community, has developed wonderfully and we have some great speakers lined up. The corresponding show has some pretty exciting work, both from artists and collaborative grouops such as the Book Arts Roundtable and Women’s Studio Workshop.

The book uses the physicality of reversed letterpress impressions as blind-embossings to signify this growth, reminding us of the discomfort felt during youth – physically, emotionally, and sexually. The illustrated “eruptions” throughout the book urge us to recall common growing experiences during formative years and thus reconcile them.
